Shunpu-kan Training Methods
Basic principle
The basic idea of the Shunpu-kan training method is to develop a spherical
type body movement so as to make all parts of your body "connected" to
each other. When a ball is rolling there is no point on it that is not moving.
So when your body is really connected you can say it rolls as a whole. It
is difficult to stop a ball from rolling by pushing, hitting or applying resistance
at only one point.
This principle can be extended to the way the human body moves. In Shunpu-kan we learn how to make a "sphere-body" or kyutai out of ourselves.
In the way we do movements like lifting or lowering our arms, or pushing and
pulling the opponent, we learn to roll as a whole.
By learning how to link all the parts of your body to function as a rolling
ball, you can move your body in an effective way. Walking like a rolling ball makes
it hard for the opponent to predict your motion. It allows you to fully utilize
the large force obtained by using the weight of your own body, which will
be effective when delivering a strong strike, or when pulling the opponent
off balance.
Our training program starts with the development of sphere-body type movement
by linking the parts of our body. The methods will be explained below.
Basic Training
We use a stick, a short rod, which is about 48 cm long.
*Morote
The *Tori makes a sphere-body by holding a short rod to form a circle with
his arms. The *Uke tries to stop the Tori by gripping his left or right forearm
firmly. The Tori turns his body towards Uke's back. If The Tori can move
correctly, just like a spinning ball, Uke will not be able to stop his movement.
*Ryote
The Tori makes a sphere body by holding a short rod to form a circle with
his arms. The *Uke holds both of the Tori's wrists firmly. The *Uke tries to
stop the Tori by gripping his left or right forearm firmly. The Tori turns his
body towards Uke's back. This will be more difficult for The Tori , because the Uke
is gripping both of his wrists. By moving without braking the sphere-body ,the
Tori will be able to keep on rolling.
By sitting
The Tori and the Uke sits in *Kiza and crosses forearms as if they were
swords. From this position, The Tori pushes the Uke backwards, the Uke tries
not to fall down by stopping or parrying the pushing. If the Tori can move
like a ball rolling towards the Uke , the Uke will not be able to resist the
pushing. As you get better, you will be able to push by your fingers.
By standing
The Tori and the Uke stands face-to-face and crosses forearms
as if they were swords. From this position, The Tori pushes the Uke , The Uke
tries not to be pushed back by stopping or parrying The Tori's pushing.
Sumo
Leaning forward and applying each others hands at the waist (not holding
Obi), just like Sumo wrestling. From this position, we push each others body
backwards, and learn how to push by our whole body.
*Zagi - training in sitting position(see movie)
Zagi1
The Tori sits in *Seiza and extends his arms at shoulders height towards the Uke .
The Uke holds The Tori's wrists and pushes him backwards. The Tori will learn
how to sit properly and use his force so that he can resist the Uke's pushing.
Zagi2
The Tori sits in Seiza and raises his shoulders. The Uke holds The Tori's wrists and pushes him backwards. The Tori drops his shoulders, so that he can
push the Uke and make him fall backwards.
Zagi3
The Tori sits in Seiza and puts his arms on his knees. the Uke holds the Tori's wrists and presses downwards. The Tori relaxes his arms and lower back, drops
his shoulders, and raises his arms to lift the Uke enough to make him lose balance.
Zagi4
The Tori sits in Seiza and puts his arms on his knees. The Uke holds the Tori's wrists and presses downwards. Depending on the way of The Uke's pressing, The Tori
can push The Uke backwards to make him fall.
Tekubi-tori(see movie)
The Tori sits in Seiza and puts his arms on his knees. The Uke holds
the Tori 's wrists and presses downwards. The Tori moves
one of his hands to the Uke's wrist and forms a sphere-body. The Tori throws
The Uke sidewards by the spinning ball type movement.
Hiji-tori(see movie)
The basic principle of Hiji-tori is the same as Tekubi-tori. The Tori moves
one of his hands to the Uke's elbow and forms a sphere-body. The Tori throws
The Uke sidewards by the spinning ball type movement.
Shutoate(see movie)
The basic principle of Syutoate is the same as Tekubi-tori. The Tori moves
one of his hands to the Uke's neck and forms a sphere-body. The Tori throws
The Uke sidewards by the spinning ball type movement.
Gyakuryu(see movie)
The Tori sits in Seiza and puts his arms on his knees.
The Uke holds one of the Tori's wrists and presses downwards. The Tori forms
a sphere-body and lifts his arm to let Uke's force flow backwards. By
making a counter flow out of the Uke's force, The Tori throws
the Uke sidewards.
Kumonosu(see movie)
The Uke holds the Tori's wrists in the same way as Zagi2 .
The Uke pushes back when he predicts the starting motion of the Tori’s pushing.
Just like how a spider sharply senses a bug caught in the web and wrap it in
its Thread, the Uke takes advantage of The Tori's motion and makes
him fall backwards.
Negaeri(see movie)
The Tori lies down on his back. The Uke applies his hands
on The Tori's shoulders and presses downwards. The Tori forms
a sphere-body and throws the Uke sidewards, in the way just like rolling
over when you are asleep.
Glossary
*Tori
the one applying the technique.
*Uke
the defensive fall, the one on who the technique is being used.
*Morote (see movie)
Holding the Tori 's left or right forearm with both hands.
*Ryote: (see movie)
Holding both of the Tori's wrists. Morote and Ryote are one of the ways of controlling the opponent
by the arm.
*Kiza (see movie)
Sitting on your legs with your toes on the floor.
*Zagi
A series of training methods in sitting position.
*Seiza
Sitting on your legs. Proper balance will be required.
*Tagai-dori (see movie)
Holding the Tori's right wrist with right hand (the opposite is OK)
*Katate-dori (see movie)
Holding the Tori's right wrist with left hand(the opposite is OK)
*Sode-dori (see movie)
Holding the Tori's right sleeve with left hand(the opposite is OK)
*Muna-dori (see movie)
Holding the Tori's cloth of chest with one hand.
